Artist Statement
Using automatic drawing as the foundation of my process, subconscious stories unfold. Emerging from layers of oil paint, chalk and pastel, my paintings unveil entangled beings that morph into undefined landscapes, revealing personally symbolic characters that reappear throughout my current work.
I’m investigating subconscious approaches alongside a personal symbology, creating pieces that flip between introspection and light absurdity. Blending interests in classical painting techniques with the spontaneity of automatic drawing, I explore that balance in my work, creating a synthesis.
Artist Biography
Rebecca is a London-based painter, textile artist and dyer for film and television, with a background in costume and performance design. She is studying Advanced Painting through a scholarship at the Essential School of Painting in London. Rebecca has exhibited at the Royal West Academy of Arts, the Old Truman Brewery, the Institute of Contemporary Arts and with CASS Art. She has completed a residency with Artspace Lifespace at the Arts Mansion in Bristol. A former UK Artist Ambassador for the EU’s Intellectual Property Office, she has directed a short surreal film for Channel 4’s Random Acts and has been featured in Beautiful Bizarre and AnOther. She occasionally teaches costume painting and dyeing for film at Pinewood Studios.
